Answer at a glance

What is therapeutic plasma exchange ?

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), also known as plasmapheresis, is a procedure that separates the plasma — the fluid portion of your blood — from your blood cells, removes a measured volume of it, and replaces it with a sterile substitute. Your red cells, white cells, and platelets are returned to you. It is an established medical procedure, performed at Aesura under physician supervision with continuous monitoring.

Setting

Physician-supervised, monitored

Plasma is the medium your body moves everything through — proteins, signaling molecules, antibodies, lipids, and metabolic byproducts. Therapeutic plasma exchange works at that level: rather than adding something to the blood, it filters and refreshes the fluid the blood is suspended in.

How therapeutic plasma exchange works

During a session, blood is drawn through a sterile, single-use circuit and passed through a separator that divides the plasma from the cellular components. A measured volume of plasma is removed and replaced with a sterile substitute fluid; your red cells, white cells, and platelets are returned to you throughout. In practical terms, a session involves:
Vascular access and a sterile, closed circuit
Separation of plasma from your blood cells
Removal of a measured plasma volume, with fluid replacement
Return of your cellular components, under continuous monitoring
Every Aesura session is performed and supervised by a physician, with monitoring throughout and a short observed recovery afterward. The number of sessions and the interval between them is individualized — there is no one-size protocol.

Physician-performed

Led by Dr. Nancy Nguyen, DO & Dr. Jijoe Joseph, DO.

Therapeutic plasma exchange is overseen by Aesura’s board-certified physicians. Dr. Nguyen leads our plasmapheresis and exosome programs; Dr. Joseph brings the longevity and regenerative-medicine lens. Candidacy is assessed individually — your history, current health, and lab work are reviewed before any plan is offered, and not everyone who inquires is a candidate. Meet our physicians →

What is therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE)
Therapeutic plasma exchange — also called plasmapheresis or plasma exchange — separates the plasma from your blood cells, removes a volume of that plasma, and replaces it with a sterile substitute. Your red cells, white cells, and platelets are returned to you. It is performed under physician supervision in a monitored clinical setting.
Plasmapheresis is an established medical procedure long used in conditions where the plasma carries substances that contribute to illness. At Aesura it is offered as a precision regenerative therapy for carefully selected patients; candidacy and goals are determined by a physician at consultation. It is not a treatment for any specific disease unless clinically indicated and supervised.

A single session typically takes three to four hours, including setup, the exchange itself, and a short monitored recovery. The number of sessions and the interval between them is individualized and determined by Dr. Nguyen at consultation.

Therapeutic plasma exchange is a well-established procedure with a strong safety record when performed under physician supervision with appropriate monitoring. As with any procedure involving vascular access, there are risks — these are reviewed in full at consultation, and every session at Aesura is physician-supervised with continuous monitoring.
Candidacy is decided after your consultation by one of our physicians — Dr. Nguyen or Dr. Joseph. They review your history, current health, lab work, and goals to determine whether therapeutic plasma exchange is appropriate for you. Not every patient who inquires is a candidate.
An IV drip adds fluids and nutrients to the bloodstream. Therapeutic plasma exchange does the opposite direction of work — it filters and removes a volume of plasma and replaces it. They are entirely different procedures with different purposes; TPE is a physician-performed clinical therapy, not a wellness drip.
