What is Sculptra, and how is it different from filler?

Sculptra is an FDA-approved biostimulator made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) — the same biocompatible material used in dissolvable surgical sutures. Unlike HA fillers, which add immediate gel volume, Sculptra triggers your own fibroblasts to produce new collagen over weeks. Results build gradually over 3–6 months and can last up to 2 years.

How Sculptra works

Sculptra is suspended PLLA microparticles. After injection into the deep dermis or subcutaneous tissue, the microparticles act as a scaffold that signals your fibroblasts — the cells that make collagen — to produce new type-I collagen. Over 9–24 months, the body resorbs the PLLA particles, leaving a denser collagen network behind. The visible effect builds gradually as that new collagen matures.

Yes — Sculptra has been FDA-approved since 2004 (originally for HIV-related lipoatrophy, then for cosmetic use). PLLA is the same biocompatible material in dissolvable surgical sutures. The most common side effects are temporary bruising and tenderness; rare nodules are minimized by proper injection technique and consistent post-treatment massage.
No — unlike HA filler, Sculptra is not dissolvable. That’s why we dose conservatively, in stages, and reassess between sessions. We’d rather have you come back for a fourth vial than overshoot.
